Periodontal Maintenance

Periodontal Maintenance
Close

Periodontal Disease is similar to other chronic diseases, such as Diabetes. The key to controlling your disease is early diagnosis and treatment, followed by prompt, ongoing, regular treatment. This entails periodontal maintenance procedures, which we call Supportive Periodontal Care (SPC).   These SPC appointments are regular periodontal cleanings that remove and control the plaque biofilm that will protect your oral health and increase  your chances of keeping your teeth.

If the plaque biofilm is not removed every 3 to 4months, periodontal bacteria can grow to a point where bone loss starts to occur again. This is why 3-4 month periodontal cleaning or SPC appointments are essential to prevent recurrence of periodontal disease and maintain a healthy mouth.

What is Periodontal Maintenance?

Periodontal Maintenance Visit

Your periodontal maintenance visit will include:

  1. An update of your medical & dental history
  2. A periodontal examination & measurement of your periodontal pockets
  3. An oral cancer screening
  4. Removal of bacterial plaque and calculus above and below the gum line
  5. Oral hygiene instructions
  6. Examination of existing restorations

A commitment to Supportive Maintenance Care  is a commitment to better health.

Team Approach

We work together with your restorative dentist as a team to provide you with the best possible care. Many times, periodontal cleanings will be alternated between our office and your restorative dentist. During the cleaning at your restorative dentist’s office, they will concentrate on what is happening with your teeth above the gum line, especially your fillings and restorations. When you visit our office, we will concentrate primarily on your supporting structures  and what is happening below the gums.

On-going SPC treatments in our office and dental visits and cleanings with your dentist will ensure your optimum oral health and highest possible care.

To prevent re-infection and avoid more periodontal treatment, it is quite important that you follow the Supportive Periodontal Care  program set out by Dr. Budd.
